Empire State Building history

The Empire State Structure is a 102-story steel-framed skyscraper in New York City that was built in 1931 and was the world's tallest building until 1971. The Empire State Building is located on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan. It is one of the most recognisable and well-known structures in the United States, as well as one of the best examples of Modernist Art Deco architecture.

There was heated competition for the title of the world's tallest skyscraper at the time of its construction. The Chrysler Building won the title in 1929, and the Empire State Building won it in 1931, with its distinctive spire, which was initially designed to serve as a mooring station for airships, reaching a height of 1,250 feet (381 metres). The building's overall height was increased to 1,472 feet (449 metres) in 1950 when a 222-foot (68-metre) antenna was erected, but the height was decreased to 1,454 feet (443 metres) in 1985 when the antenna was replaced.

Today, the Empire State Building still has important retail and office space, but visitors can take the elevators to the observation deck and galleries in the building’s spire for an incredible view of both Midtown and Lower Manhattan.
